Zakir Nagar: Map

2 comments:

  1. we are currently working with the following elements: Ambarien-the documentarian, Nilofeur-Ambarien's Alter Ego, Fearless Nadia-a historical/legendary/film actress of the 1930s Indian Cinema who played roles of outstanding prowess for her times. She was India's first Stuntwoman.
What could lead us on is to explore the relationship between Niloufer and the Fearless Nadia. Almost setting up a path to put together a hyperlinked terriain of stories and images.
I am having trouble to understand ways through which the unused documentary material becomes usable in this project. I am still thinking.
In the meanwhile, am posting a link to my last published article about the neighbourhood that Nilofeur left behind in New Delhi.

  2. This is a scan from a map I collected from an old shopkeeper in the area. In 2003 when I was collecting oral narratives in the area. As you can see, this is a really hand drawn map-an approximation of the idea of the space. The person who gave this to me said that this was about fifty years old. Neighbourhood like these would never have any official maps and trying to get around them required an 'insider's' know-how of space and etiquette!
